What is Flash Brew and Why Should You Try It?

Flash brew is a coffee brewing technique that uses hot water to extract coffee components from the grounds. The difference between flash brew and the traditional iced-coffee method is the use of ice. In flash brew, the hot water is poured onto the coffee grounds that have been mixed with ice in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. The ice helps to cool down the hot water and slows down the brewing process, leading to a less acidic and smoother cup of coffee.

Benefits of Flash Brew

One of the reasons flash brew is attracting a lot of coffee lovers is its unique taste and flavor. Flash brew coffee is less acidic and less bitter than traditional iced coffee that is brewed by pouring hot coffee over ice. The result is a smooth and refreshing cup of coffee that can be enjoyed on a hot summer day or as a pick-me-up at any time of the day. Additionally, flash brew is less time-consuming and easier to prepare, making it ideal for busy mornings or when entertaining guests.

The type of coffee beans you use can significantly affect the taste of your flash brew. For the best results, look for light to medium roast coffee beans with a higher acidity level. Coffees with lower acidity levels might taste flat and dull. Moreover, single-origin coffees are recommended, as they provide a unique and distinct flavor profile. 787 Coffee is a single origin coffee bean, sourced directly from our coffee farm in Maricao, Puerto Rico, freshest coffee in town. Flash brew, also known as Japanese iced coffee or flash-chilled coffee, is a relatively new brewing method that was developed in Japan in the 1960s. It is a cold brewing process that involves brewing coffee using hot water, which is then immediately chilled to make iced coffee.

How to make a Flash Brew at home?

Making flash brew coffee at home is relatively easy. Here is a step by step guide:

Grind coffee beans to a medium to a medium-fine consistency. The coffee should be finer than what you would use for drip coffee but coarser than espresso. - freshly ground coffee is always better.

We recommend brewing in a V-60 Pour-over and brewed just like hot coffee. The main difference? The ice, of course.

To make flash brewed coffee, you change the water to coffee ratio by replacing 1/3 or 1/2 of the water amount with ice, adding it directly to your brewing pitcher. The coffee is then poured over the ice, melting it, until the coffee is filtered into the V-60 and ready to be enjoyed immediately.

Boil water and let cool.

  1. Load ice into the pour over carafe.

  2. Place filter over the top of the ice-filled carafe, making sure it fits tightly.

  3. Add ground coffee to the filter, just like you’re making hot coffee.

  4. Pour hot water on top of the ground coffee, just enough to saturate the coffee.

  5. Let the coffee bloom for 30-45 seconds.

  6. Continue to pour water in a circular motion to fill the filter about halfway. Continue filling with water to keep the ground coffee saturated.

  7. Once all the water has been added, stir and allow the filter to drain entirely.

  8. Remove filter and stir carafe gently to ensure that it is evenly chilled. Enjoy & Get caffeinated!

History of the Flash Brew

The origins of flash brew can be traced back to the 1960s in Japan, where it was developed to accommodate the demand for iced coffee during the hot summer months. The brewing method involves pouring hot water over coffee grounds, which is brewed directly onto ice to cool it down quickly. This helps to lock in the coffee's natural flavors and aromas, resulting in a smoother and richer taste when compared to traditional cold brew.

Flash brew became popular in the United States in recent years as coffee lovers sought new and innovative ways to enjoy their favorite beverage. Today, it is preferred by many coffee enthusiasts due to its ability to preserve the unique flavors found in the coffee bean and its quick preparation time.

Flash brew is versatile and can be made using different types of coffee beans and brewing techniques. It's also highly customizable and can be enjoyed with milk, sugar, or flavorings depending on personal preference. Overall, flash brew continues to gain popularity, and its evolution from a Japanese delicacy to a global phenomenon is a testament to its unique and enticing taste.
